Can GTA 6 win GOTY 2026? Rockstar arrives just in time

GTA 6 could compete for the Game of the Year (GOTY) award at The Game Awards 2026, and its release date has a lot to do with it. The highly anticipated Rockstar Games video game will arrive on November 19, just one day before the awards eligibility window closes. Rockstar Games has already confirmed the date.

GTA 6 enters the GOTY race

According to The Game Awards’ official rules, video games must be commercially available before 9:00 p.m. Pacific Time on November 20, 2026, to be eligible. If Rockstar sticks to its schedule, GTA 6 will meet the requirement.

But there’s one important detail: being eligible doesn’t guarantee a nomination or a win. The jury will need to evaluate aspects such as the quality of the experience, the storytelling, the gameplay, and technical achievements.

Can Rockstar make history again?

Expectations are enormous. After the impact of Red Dead Redemption 2 and the historic success of GTA 5, Rockstar has the opportunity to once again redefine the open-world genre.

The new adventure will take us to Vice City, in the fictional state of Leonida, with Jason and Lucia as the protagonists. The combination of exploration, crime storytelling, and a world full of activities could make it one of the year’s biggest releases.

However, releasing so close to the deadline also presents a challenge: voters will have little time to evaluate the game before nominations close.

The Game Awards 2026 will take place on December 10.

¿Será GTA 6 el GOTY de 2026 o veremos otra sorpresa que le arrebate la corona?
