Xbox Could Be About to Change the Rules of Consoles. Its Next Generation Isn’t Just About More Power, but a Completely Different Way to Play.

Xbox is preparing its next generation, but this time Microsoft seems determined to change the rules of the game. And the key may not simply be building a more powerful console.

The project known as Project Helix represents Xbox’s bet on its next generation of hardware. Microsoft confirmed that the device is being developed in collaboration with AMD and that the first alpha versions of the hardware will begin reaching developers during 2027.

A console that also thinks like a PC

What makes Project Helix interesting is that Xbox is no longer thinking about completely separating the console and PC experiences.

Microsoft says its next generation will be designed to run Xbox and PC games while continuing to remove the barriers between both platforms. In addition, Xbox Play Anywhere now supports more than 1,500 games, allowing players to keep their progress and access their games across different devices.

And this strategy is already starting to take shape. Xbox Mode arrived on Windows 11 to offer a more console-like experience while keeping the flexibility of PC.

So, what will an Xbox be?

This is where it gets really interesting.

Microsoft appears to be moving away from the idea that Xbox is simply a box connected to the television. The company wants to build an ecosystem where the console, PC, handheld devices, and the cloud are all part of the same experience.

Xbox is even bringing classic games to PC through its backward compatibility program, reinforcing the idea that your library should follow you even when the hardware changes.

Project Helix still has many unanswered questions, but one thing is already clear: the next Xbox does not appear to be designed only to compete on power, but to compete on freedom.

¿Será este el futuro de las consolas?
