Onimusha: Way of the Sword Impresses on Nintendo Switch 2

Capcom has just revived one of its most beloved series, and it has done so with an adventure that combines samurai, demons, and a combat system far more demanding than expected.

After years away, Onimusha: Way of the Sword returns with a story starring Miyamoto Musashi, a swordsman who ends up facing the Genma, supernatural creatures invading feudal Japan. After dying, Musashi receives the Oni Gauntlet and returns to life to fight this threat.

A katana that demands precision

Combat is the main focus of this entry. Unlike a traditional hack-and-slash game, it is not about attacking nonstop, but about reading the enemy, blocking, dodging, and breaking their defense at the right moment.

The most important technique is the Issen, a counterattack that can eliminate enemies in a single strike and completely change the outcome of a battle. Boss encounters make particular use of this mechanic, with multiple phases, different patterns, and weaknesses that force players to learn their movements.

A feudal Japan full of personality

The adventure takes place mainly in Kyoto, which serves as a central area connected to different locations. Although some side missions can feel repetitive and the puzzles from the classic games are missed, the atmosphere, animations, and Spanish voice acting elevate the experience.

A strong Switch 2 adaptation

The Nintendo Switch 2 version can be played at 30 FPS or with an unlocked frame rate hovering around 40–45 FPS. It also includes motion controls for sword slashes and aiming the bow.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is not perfect, but it stands out for its combat, bosses, and cinematic style. It is one of Capcom's most interesting offerings for Switch 2.
